I primarily write about film, but I’ll also be branching out to discuss art in general. I’ll be sharing entries from my film diary, my short stories (written as a hobby), and my favorite films, along with some personal notes.

    1. It is a poem by Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi, a Persian Sufi of a poet, it goes like this “Observe the wonders as they occur around you.
      Don’t claim them. Feel the artistry moving through, and be silent.” His poem are very beautiful and spiritual.

      Here a few in English, although poetry should never be translated, as they lose their souls in translations.

    I see you like more demanding movies than just Hollywood productions.
    Emir Kusturica is always a good choice. And French movies always surprise. I wish I had more time to sit down and watch, yet time lacks nowadays.

    1. Thank for that recommendation! Hollywood productions are all too often simply formulaic nonsense! Yet, there are still some good ones that come along. I did a review for Ocean of Pearls – loved it. Have you seen it. Kartika

      1. Old Hollywood had many filmmaker making personal films, unfortunately, nowadays, it is all about the business of making money, but I do agree with you there comes along some filmmakers who still manage to make personal films; Malick, P.T. Anderson, etc. I have not seen Ocean of Pearls.

    1. Thanks you for your kind words, Tabu is my favorite film of 2012, that is why I only have praise for the film. I don’t know about mankind, but if I could share my thoughts and emotion with one person, to encourage them to experience what make humanity beautiful; that of experiencing high Art, then I think I have achieved what I set out to do in writing this blog.

    As you will have gathered, I have not visited much of Kurdistan, but there is so much possibility for me to do so with my job… and I am very excited about it. Kurdistan is a beautiful country and the people (those whom I have dealt with) are all wonderful!

  18. I’m inspired by how many films you’ve watched over the last year! If you had to recommend one (or, maybe three would be fairer) that you would say people *must* watch, which would it (they) be?

    1. It is a challenge to choose only three films among so many, but at this moment, to name three films (I will make it 7 to be lucky) that I consider to be favorite will be:
      The Crowd (King Vidor, 1928)
      By the Bluest of Seas (Boris Barnet, 1936)
      Tokyo Story (Yasujiro Ozu, 1953)
      Johnny Guitar (Nicholas Ray, 1954)
      Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958)
      Pierrot Le Fou (Jean-Luc Godard, 1965)
      Stalker (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1979)

      Any other day, another seven films could take their place…..

  27. Karzan, Greetings from Lake Superior/Michigan in America. I came across your site and would like to ask you a question. You have viewed thousands of films and certainly have learned some tremendous teachings about life from them. If you had $100,000,000 to produce a film what would YOUR film be about? It would be interesting to get a review from you on your greatest movie YET to be made. What would you want the audience to feel? Would you try to change the world into a better place for all people? Would the film be powerful enough to literally change life on Earth for this generation and all generations to come? I would think that your expression/vision of the yet to be made greatest film in history could reach your readers in a way that the film would actually get MADE. Can you see what I mean? Is there any possibility that there are men or women on Earth NOW that have the vision of a possible film that would surpass the intensity and power of any and all previous films ever made?

Dear Jim, mankind had always desired to find eternal peace and create new visions for a brighter future through creativity, and the noblest among man’s creativity is Art, but history has proven tragically that humanity desire the basis elements of life in order to survive, therefore Art has always been on the background as a force of change, for it target more of individual than collective groups, as much as I wish that a Film or a work of Art can change the world into a better place, but I”m a skeptic of that, but it can change an individual for a better one, and that should be the aim, to change one soul at time, and even if in the future I do not make a film for such aim, there are already many a films made that can enlighten the souls, and I do my best to inform and share it with others.

    Perhaps documentaries would be the avenue to affect good changes on this Earth. Documentaries which cover the topics of offshore tax haven scandals exposed by those at icij.org (International Consortium of Investigative Journalists), corruption at the World Bank exposed by former attorney at the World Bank Karen Hudes, or the dangers of GMOs by those who produced “Genetic Roulette”. The truth of geopolitical events exposed by John Perkins in his book “Confessions of an Economic Hitman” could easily be turned into an important documentary. People everywhere can produce important documentaries with inexpensive Canon video cameras. Etc….

        It took a lot of courage for John Perkins to do what he did. We need more men and women to develop such courage. This courage will change the world. It IS changing the world.

This story moved me because of the sensitivity in which it was written about the family that he came to know over time and the suffering of the family from the generic disease. Karzan writes with his heart! Karzan’s main focus is on films and cinema–his reviews are so interesting to read! But even more profound that all that he writes, is the documentary that he is working on and that should be known around the world: Halabja Documentary: Nasrin’s Story.

    I accidentatly opened your blog and for more than 3 hours can not get away. Amazing!
    I immigrated from the USSR to the USA in 1990, right before Soviet Union collapsed and I’d missed most of the agonies my friends and family went through. Life in the USA is not easy, but relatively safe, only this is a whole new story and maybe later I’ll try to write a book or something.
    Three things attracted most of my attention in your blog:
    1. You (what an interesting person you are)
    2. Your country. (I can not wait to start googling all info about you country)
    3. Your amazing collection of Russian movies, many of them weren’t available to us during the communists. I’ll try to find and watch them.
