Touch of Evil (Orson Welles, 1958)

Whenever someone asks me ‘What is your favorite film?’, the answer depends on the day’s mood. Today, while I’m writing this, my answer would be Orson Welles’s Touch of Evil. But any other day, it could just as easily be Nicholas Ray’s Johnny Guitar, or Kenji Mizoguchi’s Ugetsu, Jacques Tourneur’s Out of the Past, or John Ford’s The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

  1. Hi,
The collection of posters for the wonderful movies is astonishing! Simply magnificent!! Would it be possible to have them show up now squeezed together? That would be even nicer!!!
    Thanks!

  4. Thank you for making this list. I never know what to watch. It seems that we are in agreement on many movies, so now I have place to go for ideas.

Do you write your own screenplays as well?

    1. Glad the list is a help to you, since I have not updated the list for more than two years, there many more films to add to it.

The short films that I have made so far, I have written the script for it myself, unless you have a great talent of a writer, it is always recommend to write your owns script, for documentaries, you rarely need a script, maybe a small outline, the rest will fall in place by itself.

  5. Have you seen the following and if so, do you recommend them:
    A Letter to Breznev
    Hey Babu Reba
    Strangers in Good Company
My Mother’s Castle and My Father’s Glory
    Fanny and Alexander
    Cries and Whispers
    After the Rehersal
    Before Sunrise
    After Sunset

I just found these written down in an old notebook. Someone told me to watch them a long time ago. I have only seen the last two.

  8. I know very little about film – but I know about lists.

I started with the “top film” lists (empire, bbc, guardian, timeout etc) and moved quickly to auteur lists (Spielberg, Kurosawa, Scorsese) closely followed by the recommendations of the critics (Tony Rayns, Ed Howard, Peter Bradshaw, Mark Kermode, Allan Fish, Derek Malcolm, Roger Ebert). And on to books which had compilations of films (Oxford Book of Cinema, Foreign Film Guide, Cult films, 1000 Films TWBYD etc). newspaper articles, as well interrogating past awards (the Academy, Venice, Berlin, Nice).

The internet took off so I algorithmically scoured imdb for top-rated films, used the movielens recommendation feature, or They Shoot Pictures Don’t They list of lists.

Onto genre lists (film noir, new wave, animation, documentaries, sci-fi…). And then to the place of origin which was matched with the local cuisine – so I munched on a strange seaweed dish while watching Mizoguchi, chewed salted fish while contemplating an early Swedish film, slung burritos with Bunuel. The regions continued (Georgia, Filipino, Russian, Iranian, Taiwan, Ukranian, China, South America etc).

I interrogated the labels (Criterion, Masters of Cinema, Second Run, BFI). And sought out recommendations from the professions (an architects list, photographers choice) and even the church (the Vatican list). I started infilling the ouevre of individual directors (from Naruse to Chris Marker to Ghatak) and even individual actors.

Still not enough. I began investigating themes (the mafia, salt, water, landscape, forgotten films, desert films, classical mythology, ballet, food…) and esoteric lists (films overhead in cafes, ping pong theme, portrait formats etc)
And still the list collection continues.

So trust me when I say that I thought your list of favourite films was one of the best I have come across. I think it is both magical and very heart-felt. I’ll be honest and say I preferred your earlier list of about 366 films – the later list seemed to be filling in the blanks almost pedagogically. Perhaps he negative space in a list is as important as the negative space in a film. But great, absolutely great.
